Edmund Rice Network

The Edmund Rice Network is an association of Edmund Rice groups that have as their focus God and take their inspiration from Edmund Rice as its inspiration especially how he reflected on the call of the Gospel and did something.

THE VISION

We are people who, inspired by Edmund Rice, are redirecting our energies and resources
towards the empowerment of those at the margins of society,
in particular youth.

The Christian Brothers

The Christian Brothers are a Catholic religious order of men, which was founded by Edmund Rice in Waterford, Ireland in 1802. The Brothers first arrived in New Zealand in 1876. There are currently 30 Brothers in New Zealand

New Zealand Schools in the Edmund Rice Tradition

There are five schools associated with Edmund Rice in New Zealand and thereby part of the Edmund Rice Network: St Peter's College (Auckland), Liston College (Auckland), St Thomas of Canterbury College (Christchurch), St Kevin's College (Oamaru), Kavanagh College (Dunedin) and Nukutere College (Rarotonga, Cook Islands)

Edmund Rice Communities

There are two Edmund Rice Communities in New Zealand - Auckland and Westport. Edmund Rice Communities are intentional communities which are formed and include Brothers and people who are not Christian Brothers. The Westport community has been formed to assist the people of Westport, especially those who are really struggling. The Auckland community is open to anyone but consists mainly of young people who are undertaking tertiary studies.

Edmund Rice Camps

The Edmund Rice Camp movement started in Melbourne in the 1980s. It started in Dunedin in 1990 and will start in Auckland in 2002. Edmund Rice Camp provide holiday experiences for young children between the ages of 8 and 15. There are senior and junior camps.

Edmund Rice Volunteers

New Zealand is part of the Australia/New Zealand Edmund Rice Volunteer Scheme. This scheme offers the possibility for people to volunteer for short term/long term ministry at Edmund Rice projects. To date two New Zealanders have worked as volunteers in Africa. Possibilities for volunteers are in Rarotonga, Murupara, Westport, Australia, East Timor and Africa.

Edmund Rice Ministries

Edmund Rice ministries are projects which are set up for educational or welfare purposes for young people especially those at risk. Such projects have been set up in Murupara and Westport.

Edmund Rice Reflection Group

The Edmund Rice reflection group is a group of young people who gather together to reflect on their lives. It meets once a week in Auckland at the Edmund Rice Centre. A second group has been started in Oamaru.

Friends in Edmund is a group of people who wish to remain in contact with each other and hear of the news within the Edmund Rice Network. They are often people who work in the Edmund Rice Network or have had a long association with the network.
