NEW ZEALAND

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

IN

AFRICA

One of the four directions of the Christian Brothers over the last six years has been that of intentionality. As a result a third of the Brothers in the New Zealand Province now work outside New Zealand. A recent development has been the sending of New Zealand Brothers to Africa. This has been done in conjunction with the Melbourne Province.

Three of the New Zealand Brothers are situated in the East African area, which consists of Tanzania, Kenya and Southern Sudan. This area is under the supervision of St Patrick's Province (Victoria/Tasmania), Australia and has its own area co-ordinator and council.

Vin Ives has a managerial role at the Christian Brothers' formation house in Arusha, Tanzania. This house in the suburb of Sombetini prepares young men from the region for entry into the novitiate (the first year as a Brother). Currently Frank Chappell and a Canadian brother are also on the staff

.Paul Follas is in the same city but somewhat in the country area at Edmund Rice School, Sinon. This establishment is sponsored by St Patrick's  {Province and provides education for girls and boys who would otherwise miss out. These students include those from the famous Masai tribe. Paul has particular responsibility for the pre-school area, and also for some of the farming activity. He is also finance manager of the school. James Neill, an Edmund Rice Volunteer from Dunedin, is teaching at Sinon. Some others on the staff are Australian and African Christian Brothers.

Ben Scanlan is located in the Western Highlands of Kenya near the Ugandan border, at St Bakhita Formation Centre, Kitale. This residential establishment caters fro young Sudanese men and women, mainly from Rumbek diocese and the Nuba Mountains. Because of the savage civil war and consequent disruption, the Bishop decided to set up an off-shore locality in a peaceful environment. Formation is for church personnel in three streams: a four year secondary course for seminarian aspirants; two years for primary teacher trainees; two years (with a period in between for field experience) for catechists.
Richard Walsh is at an international house in Lusaka, Zambia (which is on the western side of Africa). It is an international spirituality centre sponsored by the Christian Brothers. At this site is one of two novitiates for the formation of Christian Brother novices from various parts of Africa. The centre is also open for spirituality courses for priests, religious and laity. Richard is the new director of this centre.
